Love dogs? Well today, 26 August, is the day to celebrate these awesome creatures. However, what is this day really all about?
In 2004, National Dog Day was founded in the US by Colleen Paige, Pet and Family Lifestyle Expert. The 26 August was the day that Colleen got her first rescue dog, 'Sheltie' when she was ten years old. The purpose of National Dogs Day is to celebrate all dogs of all breeds, mixed breeds, shapes and sizes, and to encourage people who are looking to get a dog to 'adopt and not shop'. https://www.nationaldogday.com/
Why not donate or adopt from your local dog rescue centre in support of all dogs seeking their forever homes. They may not be the perfect pedigree pooch, but they will certainly love you unconditionally.
"If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous he will not bite you. This is the principle difference between a dog and man". Mark Twain
After all, a dog is called a 'man's best friend' for a reason. Canine's are the perfect companion. They will never judge you and will love you unconditionally. To them, you are their everything. When dogs and humans interact through playing and petting, both experience increased levels of the 'love hormone' oxytocin. Humans also experience a decrease in cortisol levels, relieving stress and anxiety. Therapy dogs are used in hospitals, care homes and hospices to provide comfort, distraction and stimulation.
Remember, DOG is GOD spelt backwards.
